The first trailer just dropped for the Brad Pitt lead sci-fi thriller Ad Astra showing off both story and spectacle.

When it comes to fantastical yet grounded space thrillers, they’re a little too far and few in-between if you ask me. The last one I can really think of is Interstellar (2014) (a movie I will defend until my dying breath), and that’s kind of a shame. Not only can those types of movies deal with really cool and complex subjects, but there’s just about always a feeling of hope and optimism to them – which is a feeling this trailer gives off. Special effects and mind-bending sequences of going into black holes or whatever other cool space things are great and all, but those are no substitute for a good story.

Official Synopsis:

Astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) travels to the outer edges of the solar system to find his missing father and unravel a mystery that threatens the survival of our planet. His journey will uncover secrets that challenge the nature of human existence and our place in the cosmos.

From what we see in the trailer and the synopsis it feels like Ad Astra is putting emotion and wonder before most everything else, which is something I’m down for. When you really boil it down, the movie just seems to be about a man searching for his father and in the process learning more about him, while at the same time finding out more about our place in the universe. High concept sci-fi with heart, what’s more to want? Also, space is scary, and it’s good that a movie isn’t afraid to shy away from that.

In an interview with Collider in 2017 director James Gray gives his aim and hope for the film:

“The science-fiction genre is so tricky because there are elements of fantasy usually involved, and there are also fantastical elements. What I’m trying to do is the most realistic depiction of space travel that’s been put in a movie and to basically say, ‘Space is awfully hostile to us.’ It’s kind of a Heart of Darkness story about traveling to the outer edge of our solar system.”

Ad Astra is directed by James Gray and stars Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Liv Tyler, Donald Sutherland, and quite a few others.
