I remember back in 1997 when the film Event Horizon hit the movie channels. This was back in my impressionable years, and it truly scared me. And now, my nostalgia-hungry self is stoked to hear a brand new Event Horizon series will be coming to Amazon with the help of Paramount Television and Adam Wingard, who will executive produce and potentially direct. My fingers are crossed for this dark sci-fi horror concept to be fleshed out into a new medium.
Event Horizon was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and written by Philip Eisner. The film follows is a spaceship that uses its core to create black holes to travel through time/space, but disappears on its maiden journey. The ship is thought to be lost, but when it returns deep in space, a crew is sent on a rescue mission for survivors and to bring it home. Wherever that ship went, it brought something dark and terrifying back with it. It featured a great cast of Laurence Fishburne, Kathleen Quinlan, Joely Richardson, and 90’s horror legend Sam Neill.
For the new Amazon series, Variety confirms Wingard will executive produce along with Larry Gordon, Lloyd Levin, and Jeremy Platt. Gordon and Levin both produced the original film.
There is a lot of potential here to expand on the film. I would like to see something like American Horror Story, where each character could have an episode to explore their past, fears and what the entity on the show does to play on that. There’s a lot of mythology that could be explored here with Hell being its own ‘universe’ as well. Wingard has done some great, horrific things with You’re Next, The Guest and segments in V/H/S and V/H/S/2. He’s tried his hand with sci-fi as well with elements in his segments in both V/H/S films and the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong. I really want this to happen and see what dark ideas he can come up with for Event Horizon
