Breaking News! If you haven’t been paying attention recently, actually for a while now, Stephen King is on a slow and steady take over of our beloved streaming platforms. Okay, maybe it isn’t a takeover, (I for one would pay big bucks for a stand-alone Stephen King streaming service by the way), but he will soon have an original series/movie on all four major streaming platforms Netflix, Hulu, Shudder, and Amazon. Netflix has 1922 (2017), Gerald’s Game (2017), and the upcoming film In The Tall Grass (2019). Hulu has the Castle Rock (2018) anthology series which is headed into season 2 (the new season will reportedly focus on King’s novel Misery), Shudder is currently in production on their Creepshow Series (2019) and Deadline exclusively reported that Amazon just cast its Gunslinger for their Dark Tower (2019) series pilot.
Sam Strike (Nightflyers) will dawn the duster as Roland Deschain, the Gunslinger. Strike’s career launched across the pond with main roles in the British series M.I. High (2013-2014) and EastEnders (2013-2014). He will soon be seen in the HBO mini-series Chernobyl (2019) and he will return to his guest-starring role in Mindhunter (2017) season two on Netflix. You may also recognize him as Jackson from Leatherface (2017). Jasper Pääkkönen (Blackkklansman) will co-star as Marten — the Man in Black.
This new series will remain faithful to The Dark Tower novels written by King, and it will be independent of the 2017 film. The series is said to focus on Roland Deschain’s origin story before book one in the series of novels. Mind you, the Amazon series is still casting and is greenlit for a pilot, not a full series order so, fingers crossed the “Knights at the Amazon Arrow Shaped Table” like what they see and give us a long series run The Dark Tower deserves.
