Sir John Franklin departed from England in the early summer of 1845 with two steam-powered ships and a large crew under his command. His mission was to take the HMS Erebus and the HMS Terror north to explore the last remaining segments of the Northwest Passage and, hopefully, discover an ice-free open polar sea surrounding the North Pole. The expedition failed, resulting in the disappearance of all 129 men on board. Graves of fallen crew members were eventually found, and the corpses within showed that the men had resorted to cannibalism to survive the frozen tundra.

The Terror, an incredible novel by Dan Simmons and an upcoming Ridley Scott-produced series for AMC, attempts to re-create the events surrounding the failed expedition. What if it wasn’t just starvation and exposure that killed these men? What if there was something out there in the frigid darkness; an unseen predator stalking the ships, clawing to get in?

According to Deadline, The Terror will premier on AMC on March 26th with a two-hour first episode. AMC also released a short teaser for the series as well as some first-look images of the cast. The 10-episode series will star Jared Harris (The Crown), a he’s-so-hot-right-now Tobias Menzies (Outlander) and everyone’s favorite King-Beyond-The-Wall Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones).

When asked about the series, Executive Producers and co-showrunners David Kajganich and Soo Hugh said:

The Terror captures a rare combination of fascinating history, complex and flawed characters, the inextinguishable human spirit and the horror and promise of an uncharted world. We are looking forward to bringing viewers into this world in March.”

Hopefully The Terror will be a ratings boost for a network that has seen it’s stranglehold on the horror genre dwindle. With this all-star cast and terrific source material, I have no doubt that we are in for a treat this March. Keep an eye on Nightmare on Film Street as we will update you with any new trailers or information about The Terror as it becomes available. Until then, visit your favorite bookstore and grab a copy of Dan Simmons’ incredible novel. You will be glad you did.
