Beetlejuice (the movie). Beetlejuice (the cartoon). BEETLEJUICE … the Broadway musical? Yes! The specter will be haunting the stage very soon in his very own musical. The Warner Bros. and Langley Park production, to be directed by Alex Timbers with a book by Scott Brown and Anthony King and score by Eddie Perfect, has been in the planning stages for over a year, and casting announcements have started to roll out.
Filling Betelgeuse‘s shoes will be Alex Brightman. Brightman has been a part of many Broadway success stories filling roles in Andrew Lloyd Weber’s School of Rock (for which he earned a Tony nomination), Wicked, Big Fish, Matilda, and Glory Days. Horror fans may recognize his name from the 2009 indie film, Red Hook. Give this performance of You’re in the Band with Brightman and the cast of School of Rock a listen. Beetlejuice‘s shoes look like they may be filled just fine.
Aside from Beetlejuice, what other pair of shoes is very important to fill? That would be the black boots of goth teen, Lydia. The death obsessed protagonist will be portrayed by Sophia Anne Caruso. Caruso was previously Brigitta Von Trap in NBC’s live production of The Sound of Music. Her rise to the theater stardom came from her role as “the Girl” in Lazarus, with music written and composed by David Bowie and costarring Michael C. Hall. Take a peak at her performance of Life on Mars from Lazarus to get a taste of the talent that she possesses:
With Beetlejuice and Lydia cast, the next big roles to fill are those of Adam and Barbara Maitland, portrayed by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis in the 1988 original. With only 2 months until the preview premiere in Washington, D.C. on October 14th, those roles will not be vacant for long.
