The trailer for new horror film Belzebuth, staring Tobin Bell (Saw) has dropped and it is quite intriguing. This film is still making the festival rounds in Europe, but has secured distribution through Raven Banner who will be releasing the film theatrical in Mexico beginning January 2019. Belzebuth marks Raven Banners 2nd collaboration with Mexico’s Videocine after Issa Lopez’s Tigers Are Not Afraid.

Belzebuth is a Mexican production, from director Emilio Portes who is mostly known for his work in comedies, but also for having a dark sense of humor. His fast camera work a trademark for him, which could easily be utilized in the horror genre. Might have sounded like a stretch a few years ago, but I think we’re all pretty aware of a certain Masked Killer movie from a well known comedy director that is currently slashing it’s way up the box office charts. Portes shares writing duties on the film with Luis Carlos Fuentes which marks his first feature film.

Official Synopsis:

After losing his family in an extremely tragic way, Detective Ritter must investigate a massacre at a school perpetrated by a student. What seemed like a pretty clear case becomes much denser when a priest of the Vatican appears with another point of view.

The cast they are working with though should definitely help them. Tobin Bell, of Saw fame plays the priest Vasilio Canetti. Joining him is Tate Ellington (The Walking Dead‘s Alex, The Endless) who also is no stranger to the genre. The detective for the film, Ritter, is Joaquin Cosio, a regular on Guillermo del Toro’s television show The Strain.
