A new horror film slash psychological thriller (they call them that to get the non-horror fans to watch, you see) is headed our way from our horror – producing pals over at Blumhouse Productions. They’ve been a busy bunch, currently knee-deep in the filming of one of the most anticipated films of 2018, Halloween. But, they haven’t been too busy to tack another film to their production schedule. In fact, they’ve even had the time to court one of Hollywood’s hottest stars..
As reported by Variety, Blumhouse has recently added The Shape Of Water alumni Octavia Spencer to the cast list of the upcoming Ma. Though we don’t know much of the plot, Deadline reports Spencer will portray “a lonely woman who befriends a group of teenagers with torturous consequences for the kids”.
Ma will be directed by Tate Taylor (The Help, The Girl on the Train), who had this to say about Spencer’s addition:
Octavia is so damn likable that we usually see her in certain roles. But she’s such a good actress and this is such a complex character that if I do my job right, people in the audience are going to want to push pause and say, ‘Can we please take you out for coffee so you don’t do what you’re about to do.’
Also starring in Ma are Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers, From Dusk ‘Till Dawn) and Luke Evans (Beauty and the Beast, Dracula Untold). Diana Silvers (Glass), Corey Fogelmanis (Girl Meets World), McKaley Miller (Hart Of Dixie), Dante Brown (Lethal Weapon) and Gianni Paolo (The Mick) co-star. The screenplay is penned by Scotty Landes (Workaholics).
Jason Blum and John Norris (The Help) will produce.. The project was brought and developed by Ryan Turek, VP at Blumhouse, who will co-produce. The film is currently in production, with filming beginning in May.
No release date or additional plot details are available at this time, but we’ll update you here at Nightmare on Film Street when they land! Let us know your thoughts on the upcoming Ma in the comments, or over in our Facebook Group!
