The Cthulhu Mythos, born from the mind of the great H.P. Lovecraft, paved a very distinctive form of nightmarish horror. During Lovecraft’s lifetime, this type of writing was out of touch with the modern literary trends; and unfortunately he died in poverty. Yet as most artists in our history, recognition came posthumously. In the 80 years following Lovecraft’s death, countless adaptations have surfaced in many forms, including film and literature. Lovecraft’s work continues to be published today in various editions claiming his “best and comprehensive works” (which I still purchase regardless). Yet within the last 30 years, video games have taken the reins of interpreting Lovecraft’s work; or at least utilize ideas loosely based on the Cthulhu Mythos. The most recent, and anticipated for me personally, is The Call of Cthulhu.
Cyanide Studio has been currently developing the latest Lovecraftian adaptation in the terrifying newly titled, Call of Cthulhu videogame. Focus Home Interactive, which have partnered with Cyanide on previous gaming titles, will be publishing the latest Lovecraftian title. In a statement by Focus Home Interactive President, Cédric Lagarrigue, he states:
We are deeply honored to be partnering with Cyanide again. They’ve grown alongside us for the past 10 years, to become today one of the best independent developers in Europe. With titles such as Styx: Master of Shadows and the Blood Bowl series, they’ve proved their creativity and ability to offer strong gaming experiences in original worlds. Cyanide has been wanting to make a Call of Cthulhu adaptation for years. They now hold all the cards to create a game that will please fans of the Cthulhu mythos, as well as players eager for rich and original gaming experiences.
Meanwhile die hard fans await the release of Call of Cthulhu, a gameplay trailer was recently uploaded to demonstrate the game firsthand:
The Call of Cthulhu will be set as an investigative-based RPG (role-playing game) heavily immersed in the survival-horror world. The latest consoles such as PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (Microsoft Windows) will be releasing the title sometime this year. Developers will utilize the award winning Unreal Engine (Bioshock: Infinite/Unreal Tournament) for developing the game. Employing a semi-open world environment, the game will be filled with Lovecraftian themes and psychological terror that will be sure to terrorize your sense of safety. According to the gaming publishers website, the following synopsis is provided:
The game will take players to Darkwater Island, a grim, disturbing place and let them control Edward Pierce, a former war veteran and private investigator in 1920s Boston. He will be investigating the tragic and mysterious death of Sarah Hawkins, an acclaimed artist who has recently moved with her husband and their family to Darkwater Island.
