Details are sparse, but we have word that a new horror series is coming from Oscar winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón and Oscar winning actor Casey Affleck. Deadline reports the unnamed project is currently being pitched to premium cable networks with both names attached. It’s being developed under Anonymous Content, the production company who is behind Mr. Robot.
Though we don’t know many plot details, there are rumours that the show will revolve around the origins of a cult. Cuarón will write, direct and executive produce. Affleck will starring and executive produce. Anonymous Content, which signed Cuarón earlier this year, is also producing.
This would be the first small screen role for Casey Affleck, who won an Oscar earlier this year for Manchester By the Sea. He also starred, though mostly draped in a sheet, in A24’s indie horror/drama Ghost Story. Affleck will star opposite Robert Redford in the upcoming Old Man and the Gun and in Light of My Life, which he also wrote and directed.
Alfonso Cuarón is the filmmaker behind the Sandra Bullock led sci-fi film Gravity. He took home the Best Director Oscar for directing the film. He’s also the filmmaker behind Children of Men, Y Tu Mama Tambien and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Roma, his next film, will be released next year. In TV-land, Cuarón was co-creater and executive producer on Believe, the NBC drama series. As a director he’s known for his dark palette and interesting sets and use of landscape. It’ll be interesting to see how his style will lend to a horror atmosphere. Fingers crossed for a period piece! We’d love to see some more jagged cliffs like the oddly transported Hogwarts grounds in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
