Looks like Brandon Cronenberg’s tale of an idyllic vacation gone wrong has caught the attention of the Paris-based Celluloid Dreams, who helped bring films like 2007’s Funny Games to the big screen.
Son of horror legend David Cronenberg, Brandon Cronenberg’s original screenplay Infinity Pool follows a writer and his wife on holiday who are befriended by a couple while enjoying an all-inclusive vacation at a luxurious resort. The luxurious resort sits nestled on a beautiful island, however, the island’s countryside is deemed off-limits. When the two couples decide to picnic in the forbidden land their vacation takes a major turn for the worse.
The horror that ensues is said to play on our existential fears while providing some social satire. Between that and the posh exotic setting Cronenberg’s newest film is bound to get under your skin. Cronenberg’s first feature film was 2012’s Antiviral, which took home the award for Best Canadian First Feature Film at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. Cronenberg will also be attending Cannes this year for his short film Please Speak Continuously and Describe Your Experiences as They Come to You.
In recent years the mix of social satire and unsettling terror has become a real staple of the horror genre. After his debut with Antiviral, it will be exciting to see how Cronenberg can bring his perspective to this sub-genre of horror. While none of the cast has been announced as of yet, the film is set to start shooting later this year.
With summer holidays right around the corner, there’s nothing like the announcement of resort horror to get us all a little creeped out. Are you ready to check in to Infinity Pool?
