Hello fiends, and welcome to Demented Discs, where we bring you the lowdown on this month’s DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD genre releases!

We’re in those dog days of summer and it is hot hot hot out there, so if you’ve already burned through July’s releases another month brings another onslaught(er). Without further ado, here’s the upcoming August releases to look forward to.

The Changeling

Courtesy of Severin Films, this haunted house classic will be released in HD on Blu-ray for the first time in the US! There will be a plain Blu-ray edition, as well as a Limited Edition bundle that includes an embossed slipcover (with cool artwork) and a CD of the film’s soundtrack. AND if you’re ordering from Severin Film’s own website, that edition includes an 18×24 poster, an enamel pin, and a replica of the iconic red ball from the film. So ‘bounce’ on over to their website and snatch that up while supplies last!

Writer/director Coralie Fargeat adds a much-needed female touch to the polarizing rape revenge subgenre. It wont be premiering on Shudder until September 13th, so if you missed it in theatres be sure to snatch it up. I haven’t seen it but I’ve heard good things, and it’s apparently quite bloody.

From the writer of The Orphanage (2007) comes this tale of “A young man and his three younger siblings, who have kept secret the death of their beloved mother in order to remain together, are plagued by a sinister presence in the sprawling manor in which they live.” Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) is an outsider who starts canoodling with the young man. Mystery and intrigue surely await.

This one tells the story of a teen girl who “performs an occult ritual to evoke a witch to kill her mother” which ends up being a bad decision for some reason. I heard decent things about this one upon its initial release and the trailer looks creepy enough. And lord knows I love witchy things so I’ll be checking this one out for sure.

Starring Liv Tyler and indie breakout Bel Powley, Wildling is about a young girl who grew up being held in captivity by her creepy father and, following a certain incident, is now tasked with assimilating into normal society.

Bad Samaritan

If you’re sick of the likable, witty, charming David Tennant of Doctor Who fame then Bad Samaritan should alleviate that. Here he plays an all-around asshole whose fancy home hides a young woman held captive. Something two delinquents discover when they break in, intending to rob him. He isn’t happy about it.

Return of the Living Dead Part II

Genre saviors Scream Factory are releasing a brand new 2K scan of the horror classic for the first time on their Collector’s Edition Blu-ray. Including all new commentary tracks and featurettes, this one is not to be missed.

The Terror, Season 1

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPuYei9cbaw]

AMC’s new horror hit arrives today, which goes like this: “In 1848, two real life warships, HMS Terror and HMS Erebus, sent on a Royal Naval expedition to find the treacherous Northwest Passage become trapped in ice near Arctic and face starvation, mutiny, cannibalism and a demonic polar bear.” It’s been quite well received by genre fans so it’s worth picking up if you’re a fan of spooky period pieces. You can check out Tyler’s episode recaps here.

Available on: Blu-ray, DVD

Ash vs. Evil Dead, Season 3

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig99vvjeUeI]

And who could exclude horror icon Ash and his undead nemeses? The Starz program was canceled earlier this year, making this third season the last one. But three seasons is better than none, right?

August 28

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36PDeN9NRZ0]

On paper this one should’ve been a flop, but word of mouth has proven Upgrade to be a surprisingly fun ride (check out Jonathan’s review here). The future-set flick sees Logan Marshall-Green starring as a man who gets an “experimental computer chip” implanted in him, which ends up having some unplanned side effects. Word is things get pretty bloody here too.

Available on: Blu-ray, DVD

Mary Shelley

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6JqFYroayo]

Elle Fanning has been giving her older sister quite the run for her money these last few years. And she shows no signs of slowing down, with this new release she plays none other than author Mary Shelley, the woman responsible for bringing Frankenstein to life. The film tracks her love affair with a poet that lead to her creating one of the most iconic characters in horror.
