It seems every couple of months we catch wind of new casting details in The Silence; the upcoming film from horror frequenter John R. Leonetti. You may have seen some of his recent romps in the genre, including; Annabelle, Wolves at the Door, and most recently, Wish Upon.
The Silence is gathering some steam; Kiernan Shipka had previously been announced as the young protagonist of the film, portraying a deaf girl who provides the family’s only hope of survival. Shipka recently starred alongside Emma Roberts in horror slow-burn The Blackcoat’s Daughter. Actors also signed on for the film are Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones) , John Corbett (All Saints), and Mirando Otto (Annabelle: Creation).
Deadline reports, The Silence is based on the best-selling novel by fantasy/horror author Tim Lebbon (Star Wars: Into The Void and The Cabin in the Woods) and adapted into a screenplay by The Van Dyke Brothers, Carey and Shane (Chernobyl Diaries). The film centers on Ally, a deaf teenager, who lived in New Jersey where a colony of bats are attacked by a parasitic insect and soon morph into a new lethal species called Vesps. As the blind, winged creatures quickly grow, spread and attack the human population, Ally’s heightened senses become her strength. She and her family seek refuge in the woods where they must live in total silence and amidst the creature chaos, they learn that humans can be just as dangerous.
A family struggling to survive in a world terrorized by a deadly, primeval species who have bred for decades in the pitch darkness of a vast underground cave system, hunting only with their acute hearing. As the family seeks refuge in a remote haven where they can wait out the invasion, they start to wonder what kind of world will remain when they’re ready to emerge.
The Silence is produced by Robert Kulzer (Resident Evil), Alexandra Milchan (Wolf of Wall Street) and Scott Lambert (AMC’s The Terror) with Constantin CEO Martin Moszkowicz.
Global Road Entertainment has acquired rights to U.S. distribution to The Silence and have plans for release sometime in 2018.
