I put a spell on you. And now you’re mine! Hello, Salem! My name’s Winifred!

A spell has most definitely been cast on fans of the beloved 1993 Halloween Disney film, Hocus Pocus. With a strong cult following and continual airing on Disney and ABC Family, Hocus Pocus has stood the test of time as new generations are embracing the Halloween favorite. The film was originally written by Mick Garris, most notable for directing Stephen King adaptations such as The Stand and Sleepwalkers, and directed by Kenny Ortega (High School Musical 3). In recent weeks, there’s been talk of a possible sequel/reboot of the original film. With The Royals writer, Scarlett Lacey, penning the new project, Disney may perhaps move forward with an entirely new cast as well; yet for one actor in particular, there just might be an exception.

Doug Jones, recently making headlines with The Shape of Water, as well as his involvement on the US reboot of What We Do In The Shadows, has noted his interest in returning to one of Hocus Pocus’ most beloved roles, Billy Butcherson. Doug Jones recently spoke with Digital Spy regarding his spark in interest once catching wind of a possible follow-up. Jones states, There was talk about doing a ’20 years later’ sequel that I would have been involved with,” he said. “I was actually approached and asked about that. I would love to reprise Billy Butcherson.” When asked if originally a planned sequel could still happen, Jones responded, “It’s not off the table,” he said. “The news article that I read about this TV movie sounds like… I’m not sure if it’s a reboot or if it is that ’20 years later’ sequel. It was grey about what the storyline was. So I’m just going to keep my knees bent and be ready in case they call.”

The recent months has not only shown anticipation for a Hocus Pocus film/television follow-up, but on January 31st, Disney announced a direct sequel in the form of a novel. Published through Disney’s blog site, OhMyDisney, the article mentions, “There is a new book coming out just in time for the 25th anniversary of the iconic film.” A summary of the upcoming novel is said to be in two parts, “Part one is a fresh retelling of the original film, and part two is a sequel that continues the story of our favorite characters and the next generation of Salem teens.”

Even Doug Jones is well aware of the ever growing popularity of the Hocus Pocus universe. Jones states, “It only grows in popularity every year,” said Jones. “I did not see that coming, that 24 years later it would be more popular now than it’s ever been! That’s crazy for a movie to do!”
