Speculation for the upcoming Scream sequel has been at an all-time high in the last few weeks. Most recently, it was announced that Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courtney Cox, and Mary Shelton would be returning to reprise their roles from previous films but there has still been no word on who will be the sequel’s official Final Girl…until now. Jenna Ortega was added to the growing cast of Scream 5 a few weeks ago, as reported by Deadline, but her role was undefined. It’s still too early to speculate who exactly will be hiding under the iconic Ghostface mask, but we do know now who he will be chasing after (aside from Sidney Prescott of course).

In a recent interview promoting The Babysitter: Killer Queen, director McG shared some exciting news with Nightmare on Film Street:

The opportunity for romance with Cole and who we think is Melanie only to ultimately be Phoebe and what I think is the discovery of a major young star in Jenna Ortega. I mean she’s the lead of the upcoming Scream movie. She’s booking everything in town. She’s so talented and so charismatic and original.

Ortega is most well known for her role Young Jane in Jane, The Virgin but horror fans will no doubt remember her performance as Annie in Insidious 2 and Eillie in season 2 of You. Ortega can also be seen in the genre-blending horror-comedy sequel The Babysitter: Killer Queen now streaming on Netflix. Read our spoiler-free review of the film HERE, and check out our full interview with director McG HERE.

Scream 5 is being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of Radio Silence (Ready or Not) from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) and Guy Busick (Castle Rock) with creator Kevin Williamson signed on as executive producer alongside Radio Silence memeber Chad Villella.
