Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have had quite the rise over the last few years. After the duo got their names on the map with the V/H/S: Viral segment “Bonestorm,” they really got to work. 2014’s Spring was a delightful little Lovecraftian love story, and 2017’s The Endless was a fascinating look at cults and communes. The duo is riding that indie love to bigger and better things, and we just got our first look at their next work: Synchronic.
The film stars Anthony Mackie (Black Mirror, Point Blank) and Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey, The Fall) as paramedics in New Orleans. They start to notice several of their calls are tied to the same designer drug, and they always encounter bizarre and grotesque sights when the arrive on the scene. Considering the other work we’ve seen from Benson and Moorhead, we’re expecting some seriously mind-bending imagery in Synchronic.
The first image from the film comes courtesy of Benson via Entertainment Weekly. He also had this hint to drop about the direction the film, stating that “In a movie with a lot of mysteries to be solved, Anthony and Jamie gave two heartbreaking, funny, beautifully human performances that keep it all feeling natural … And they were lovely to work with throughout, which for two indie film directors stepping into a larger puzzle-box of a movie and trying to keep it personal, frightening, and exciting, was a wonderful gift.”
Both Mackie and Dornan have done some work with the mysterious. Besides The Fall, Dornan also worked on Once Upon a Time, and Mackie appeared in both Black Mirror and the second season of Altered Carbon. We don’t have a ton of details about Synchronic at the moment, but we will keep you updated as we learn more about the film.
