Unless you’ve been off social media for the past year or so, you probably already know that R.L. Stine’s popular book series, Fear Street, has three movies in development at 20th Century Fox. Major details about the project have been kept under wraps, but over the past several months more information has slowly been revealed. Now, the first cast members have been announced and we have a small teaser that sheds a little more light on the characters and plot.
Kiana Madeira (web series Sacred Lies) and Olivia Welch (TV’s Modern Family) are set to star in all three films. The trilogy is being produced by 20th Century Fox. A pair of directors, Honeymoon‘s Leigh Janiak and Her Smell‘s Alex Ross Perry, are already attached to the project. Sources report that Janiak is set to direct the first and third movie, while Perry will helm the middle chapter.
Collider reports, “Madeira and Welch will each be playing gay teenagers trying to navigate their rocky relationship when they’re targeted by the crazy horrors of their small town, Shadyside.”
R.L. Stine’s Fear Street book series kicked off in 1989 with The New Girl and, with various spin-offs along the way, became a reading staple among teenagers throughout the 1990s. The series was recently revised in 2018 as Return to Fear Street, which currently has three titles out, beginning with You May Now Kill the Bride. The launch of the original Fear Street preceded Stine’s wildly popular kids series, Goosebumps, by three years. Goosebumps has already been adapted into two successful movies starring Jack Black, 2015’s Goosebumps and 2018’s Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween.
