The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) recently announced their first wave of films for their 2018 program. Include among them was the mysterious, genre bending thriller, Freaks. Starring Emile Hirsch (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Into the Wild) and Bruce Dern (The Hateful Eight, Nebraska). Details are vague right now but we do know that Hirsch plays a paranoid father, trying to desperately to protect his daughter from the dangers outside, and the ominous Mr. Snowcone.

Thanks to the huge success of Netflix’s Stranger Things, and last year’s IT, kids are making a big comeback in the horror genre. Like your Goonies or your Monster Squads of the 1980’s, kids are once again being dropped into danger. A slew of films from all genres were announced Wednesday but Freaks has definitely peaked our interest.

Synopsis Provided by TIFF:

In this genre-bending psychological sci-fi thriller, a bold girl discovers a bizarre, threatening, and mysterious new world beyond her front door after she escapes her father’s protective and paranoid control

Freaks comes from the minds of Zach Lipovsky & Adam B Stein, who wrote, directed and produced the feature. Lipovsky’s previous works include Leprechaun: Origins (2014) and Dead Rising: Watchtower (2015). The two have also tag teamed directing Disney‘s upcoming feature length, live version of Kim Possible.

Most importantly, Bruce Dern (an Oscar nominated actor!) is portraying a character named Mr. Snowcone. We know little about him, his intentions or his motives. If I had to guess, I’d say he’s planning on something a little more sinister than selling snow cones. For now, all we have to go on is a creepy image and an intriguing amount of ambiguity. I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see.

Freaks will celebrate it’s world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival September 7, 2018. Are you excited for this freaky little film? Will you be in the Toronto area for TIFF? let us know in the
