Every year, just after Halloween, the citizens of Halloween Town descend on Disney’s The Haunted Mansion. Redecorating in their mansion in their own style, the ghouls completely takeover the attraction. This year, with the help of Oogie Boogie, the Haunted Mansion is also home to a gigantic gingerbread house. Housed in the ballroom, the ginger-dread house stands six feet tall, with over 200 pounds in gingerbread used in its construction. The Shopping List, as detailed in the Disney Parks blog is as follows:
1 x 6-Foot Gingerbread House
- 200 pounds gingerbread
- 200 pounds powdered sugar
- 4 gallons egg whites
- 1 gallon lemon juice
- 30 pounds white chocolate
- 50 pounds gum paste
- 8 ounces (each) food coloring (blue, purple, orange, yellow, red)
- 16 ounces green food coloring
- 50 pounds fondant
- 1/3 pound glitter
- 200 hours Disney Culinary Magic
Just your standard, regular, 6 foot tall gingerbread house recipe.
Sadly, his year’s house is infected….with gingerbread bugs! If you look closely on the display table you’ll see over 70 ginger-bugs crawling around, terrorizing the little model town. According to Tim Wollweber, associate art director for Disney Parks, “quite a few bugs have gotten loose and are rampaging across the ballroom table, tormenting the gingerbread zombies there, who are forced to defend themselves with silverware!” Below is a timelapse video of the Ginger-Dread House‘s creation.
Ain’t nobody makin’ gingerbread houses the way Disney’s making gingerbread houses. At some point, someone needs to ask, does the house have running water, and how much is rent? Like you, I’ve spent too make time this year looking at Tiny Home blueprints. It seems every time a friend purchases a new home or if my wallet hears the word mortgage, I’m up all night trying to decode what 3 shirts I’ll be keeping in the exodus to 50 square-foot living. And really, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll be able to a buy a teenie-tiny little plot of land for your gingerbread house-sized home.
