Even the most confident criminals need to be wary of picking their victims. The consequences of an ill-fated crime have played out before in horror, with films like Don’t Breathe (2016) and The Last House on the Left (1972) warning ner’ do’ wells about potential consequences that reach beyond the arm of the law.
The new horror film Villains has drawn buzz on the festival circuit and promises to bring something new to what we’ll call the “crime doesn’t pay” horror subgenre. Following it’s much-praised World Premiere at SXSW earlier this year, Gunpowder & Sky’s horror branch Altar just announced they would be releasing Villains nationwide on September 20th, 2019.
Villains stars Bill Skarsgård, Maika Monroe, Jeffrey Donovan & Kyra Sedgwick and is written and directed by Dan Berk and Robert Osen. Here’s the official synopsis:
Mickey and Jules are lovers on the run, headed southbound for a fresh start in the Sunshine State. When their car dies after a gas station robbery, they break into a nearby house looking for a new set of wheels. What they find instead is a dark secret and a sweet-as-pie pair of homeowners who will do anything to keep it from getting out.
The film boasts a strong cast and an intriguing premise — placing it high on our list of films to keep an eye out for this year. Looking at Alter and Gunpowder & Sky’s previous horror releases definitely gets our hopes up even more, with some of the buzziest horror of the past few years under their belt, including Cam (2018), Summer of ‘84 (2018), Tragedy Girls (2017) and Hounds of Love (2016).
If a “reverse home invasion” horror film with a scream-worthy cast sounds like your cup of tea, check out Villians when it’s released nationwide September 20th.
