Casting for the DC Universe streaming series Swamp Thing continues to ramp up. It was recently announced that Virginia Madsen would be joining a cast that includes Jennifer Beals (Flashdance) and Crystal Reed (Gotham). Now the time has come for the titular Swamp Thing and his human counterpart to finally be revealed.

Andy Bean, who stars in next years IT: Chapter 2 as the older Stanley Uris, has been cast as the pre-monstrous biologist Alec Holland. While horror icon and rumored front-runner, Derek Mears (Friday the 13th, 2009) has officially signed on to play the thing from the swamp itself. In even more casting news, Will Patton (Halloween, 2018) joined the cast earlier this week as Avery Sunderland, a local Louisiana business and the husband of Madsen’s character Maria Sunderland.

According to DC Universe, Swamp Thing follows CDC researcher Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) as she “returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus,” where “she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland (Bean) only to have him tragically taken from her.  But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous–and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.”

The series, executive produced by famed horror director, James Wan, will not only lean into the horror aspects of the comics but also rely on practical effects, especially when it comes to the elemental hero’s suit. In a recent interview with /Film, writer Gary Dauberman (IT, The Nun) said:

Swamp Thing himself looks incredible what Justin Raleigh and the guys over at Fractured are doing with the suit. So it’s going to look amazing and less of the “man in suit” that you’ve seen in the movie and the other TV show.”

It is important to remember that this is not the first live-action attempt at the bog monster. Back in 1982, master of horror Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream) directed a feature-length film starring Ray Wise (Reaper, Twin Peaks) and the incomparable Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog).

Swamp Thing will debut on DC Universe in 2019.  Be sure to follow us on Twitter and our Horror Group on Facebook for all the latest on Swamp Thing, as well as all other things sci-fi and horror.
