Puppet fans, rejoice! Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal is heading to 4K Ultra High Definition! Hot on the heels of the recent 35th anniversary, an all-new scan of the popular dark fantasy is set to hit shelves next March.

A testament to Henson’s dedication to the craft of puppetry, the 1982 film has delighted both kids and adults for decades. This new scan, pulled from the original film negatives, will immerse audiences in the dark fantasy world like never before.

The Dark Crystal follows a Gelfling orphan named Jen on a quest to find a shard of a legendary crystal, the titular Dark Crystal. As long as the magical gem is incomplete, the monstrous Skeksis (a race of reptilian-bird creatures) will rule the land in chaos.

Being a product of the late, great Jim Henson, The Dark Crystal features some of the most innovative and important puppeteers in history. Henson co-wrote, co-directed, and co-starred in the film. His frequent collaborator, (international treasure) Frank Oz, also directed and starred in the movie.

The Dark Crystal may not be “horror” in the same sense as The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Return of the Living Dead, or Saw, but it works as a dark fantasy that the entire family can enjoy. Some of the Skeksis scenes can be frightening for younger viewers, which I think is great. Give the kids a scare!

Sony Pictures will release the remastered Dark Crystal on 4K UHD on March 6th, 2018. In addition to the film, the release will feature behind-the-scenes footage, original theatrical trailers, and deleted scenes. This release can be preordered from Best Buy here. Lastly, Frank Oz recently joined Twitter, so be sure to drop by and tell him how much you love The Dark Crystal (and Yoda, and Miss Piggy, and Little Shop of Horrors) because he’s the raddest.
