Another actor is rumored to be playing the Joker in a DC film, and this time it’s Joaquin Pheonix.
If you have not been following the confusing situation surrounding the DC Film Universe, here’s a quick recap: Jared Leto portrayed the Joker in Suicide Squad, and was bashed by audiences and critics alike. DC, in a strange move, then announces that they will begin making DC films outside of their extended universe, meaning multiple actors can portray characters like the Joker. Confused yet? Jared Leto is set to reprise his role as the Joker in the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel, as well as a spin-off titled Gotham City Sirens and an untitled film starring alongside Harley Quinn.
Because of this, there have been many rumors of who will be the next actor to don the green hair and white face paint. There were talks of Leonardo DiCaprio playing the role, but now it seems that Joaquin Pheonix is the frontrunner. Some sources say that he has already signed on to the role, but Warner Bros. has not yet confirmed this.
According to Guardian, “The film will explore the character’s time in Gotham as he becomes a supervillain. It will be produced by Martin Scorsese and the tone has been likened more to a gritty crime drama than one of DC’s recent entries.” The film takes place in the 80s and will be an origin story for the clown prince of crime; it will be directed by Tom Phillips, director of The Hangover.
Although it seems to be an intriguing new take on the environment we usually see the Joker in, it will be interesting to see if audiences are ready to see another Joker on the big screen so soon. Before Leto, Heath Ledger portrayed the Joker in the Dark Knight Trilogy, and many people consider him to be the best portrayal of the villain that we have seen.
We still have a long way to go before this Batman prequel hits theaters, so we will just have to wait and see what new tricks DC has up their sleeve.
