We know you’ve already seen (and appropriately squealed at) the first images of Joaquin Phoenix on the set of Joker. Well, get ready, because we’ve got even more to show you. Today, director Todd Phillips took to Instagram to give us an update on the movie, and he released something special. Check out his post below for your very first look at Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck in full Joker makeup!

Camera test (w/ sound). Joker.

Set to the appropriate tune of ‘Laughing’ by The Guess Who, this brief camera test with sound gives us a mysterious but enticing picture of the film. Clearly, Phoenix’s Fleck is a disturbed individual, even though he says nothing. First, we watch the muddy, grim color palate begins to flicker with mad color. Then, ghastly images of a clown begin to morph with Phoenix’s face, culminating in a smash cut to Fleck in clown makeup and green hair. Finally, just as the music cuts, the Joker stops smiling.

Now, I can’t claim to know exactly what camera tests are for. But I know this one passed.

Set in a gritty, Taxi Driver-inspired Gotham City, Joker follows comedian Arthur Fleck as he descends into madness and crime. The film stars the aforementioned Phoenix as the title role, as well as megastars like Robert De Niro and Marc Maron. The Todd Phillips-directed project breaks completely from the previously established DC Cinematic Universe, and it is currently filming in New York City. As of now, Joker‘s release date is October 4th, 2019.

What do you think of the Joker camera test? Does it make you excited for the film? Where do you think Phoenix will sport a ‘damaged‘ tattoo? Give us a shout on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram to let us know. For all your Joker news, keep lurking at Nightmare on Film Street.
