Gone are the days when people huddled together every week to catch the latest episode of their favorite radio program. Here to alleviate that nostalgia (that most of us never even experienced in the first place) is Ali Garfinkle and Alex Aldea’s new murder mystery podcast Deadly Manners.
Narrated by LeVar Burton of Reading Rainbow and Roots fame,
Deadly Manners is a 10 episode, dark comedy murder-mystery series set in the winter of 1954. It follows the events during the night of the affluent Billings family annual dinner party with their distinguished, eccentric guests. However, all is not fun and fames as shortly after the party starts, a snowstorm begins to rage outside, trapping all the partygoers inside their host’s mansion. When a murderer starts killing off those in attendance, the guests must figure out who is responsible, or at least how to stay alive — lest they be next.
Kristen Bell leads the pack as the uptight hostess, and is joined by Dennis O’Hare as her husband. Deadly Manners also boasts a colorful cast of supporting characters including Veep‘s Anna Chlumsky and RuPaul playing a fortune teller.
After expressing his love of books on tape, co-creator Aldea told EW,
For Deadly Manners though, we wanted to do an old school audio drama that was pure entertainment, where the audience can get out of their heads for a minute, relax and enjoy themselves. It’s a crazy world we are living in right now, and people are reacting in extremes. Deadly Manners is like classic Clue fun.
Having listened to the first two episodes, I can confirm it is indeed a fun time. The actors are clearly all having a ball with their dramatic line deliveries, and I found myself giddily gasping at the fun turns of events. If you’re in the market for a good old fashioned whodunit to listen to this October look no further.
The first two episodes are available to download and stream on Sundance Now and iTunes, with Shudder also boasting the third if you’re antsy.
