The highly anticipated trailer for Netflix series, Maniac, comes with a high production value of stellar visuals, a caliber cast, and an awe-inspiring narrative most of us can relate to. Directed by Cary Fukunaga (True Detective: Season One) and written by Patrick Somerville (The Leftovers), Maniac centers around characters Owen Milgrim and Annie Landsberg (played by Jonah Hill and Emma Stone) partaking in human drug trials, geared towards curing mental illness. Leading scientist Dr. James K. Mantleray, played by Justin Theroux (Mulholland Drive), proclaims that understanding the structure of the human mind can lead to changing anything about ourselves (in a positive way). He proclaims, Pain can be destroyed. The mind can be solved.”

The limited series, containing ten half hour episodes, will premiere September 21st, 2018 on Netflix. Maniac’s visually stunning trailer follows our main characters through a series of simulated environments, one of which shares a striking resemblance to the world of Game of Thrones. Through the various virtual-multiverse realities, which perhaps serve as a form of therapy throughout the drug trials. Owen and Annie continue crossing into each other’s worlds, demonstrating the narrative of broken hearts while showing a love that preservers. As Dr Mantleray pleads for answers, his assistant replies, “Every time I separate them, they just find their way back together

The motives behind our characters reason for partaking in such a clinical trial is offered vaguely in the series’ trailer. Hill’s character discusses his feelings with Annie in a form of desperation. Regarding the trials, he states, “I thought maybe these people could fix me. It sounds stupid.” For a more detailed synopsis, the Maniac Wikipedia page offers the following plot:

Maniac follows “Annie Landsberg and Owen Milgrim, two strangers drawn to the late stages of a mysterious pharmaceutical trial, each for their own reasons. Annie’s disaffected and aimless, fixated on broken relationships with her mother and her sister; Owen, the fifth son of wealthy New York industrialists, has struggled his whole life with a disputed diagnosis of schizophrenia. Neither of their lives have turned out quite right, and the promise of a new, radical kind of pharmaceutical treatment—a sequence of pills its inventor, Dr. James K. Mantleray, claims can repair anything about the mind, be it mental illness or heartbreak—draws them and ten other strangers to the facilities of Neberdine Pharmaceutical and Biotech for a three-day drug trial that will, they’re assured, with no complications or side-effects whatsoever, solve all of their problems, permanently.
