Shark movies are back, baby! The past few years have seen a resurgence in the sub genre, highlighted by 2016’s The Shallows and 2017’s 47 Meters Down. Next year looks to continue the trend with the addition of The Meg starring Jason Statham. Thanks to Britain’s finest export Empire Magazine, we have been given a first look at the film!
Judging by the size of the beast in the image below, I really hope that this is a baby-megalodon. The other promotional images of the film seem to show a much larger, much scarier fish. Either way, this is going to be an awesome movie filled with epic monster action and carnage. The question is, however, how will The Stath punch his way out of this one?
Set to released on August 10th, The Meg is based on the novel by Steve Alten where:
A deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time.
As someone who loves cryptids but is terrified to enter any body of water not called a “pool” or a “hot tub”, next year’s The Meg looks to be my next dose of Nightmare Fuel and I can’t wait!
