There are rare cases where when I’m drawn to a movie that doesn’t exactly look the best. The film might not have the best effects or acting, but as long as it looks like interesting and/or fun: you shall have my attention. This is exactly the feeling I got when watching the trailer for the new Horror The Rizen coming out of SFL 2017 (London International Festival of Science Fiction and Fantastic Film).
The Rizen is a good ol’ fashioned “Survive & Escape” horror flick with a Sci-Fi twist, described on IMDB as:
The year is 1955. NATO and the Allied Forces have been conducting secret, occult experiments in a bid to win the Arms Race. Now, they have finally succeeded but what the Army has unleashed threatens to tear our world apart. One woman must lead the only survivors past horrors that the military has no way to control – and fight to close what should never have been opened.
Like I mentioned above, the film doesn’t appear to be the next Get Out or anything, as the budget appears significantly smaller, but the stylish trailer drew me in anyways. The trailer gives small vignettes of what to expect from the film and The Rizen seems to have it all: blood, violence, monsters, action, a butt-kicking female protagonist, you name it. All set to the tune of “Tell Me Why” by The Four Aces (I’m a sucker for slightly creepy, vintage songs) and you got yourself a fun trailer. Think Resident Evil meets Event Horizon, in a way.
In today’s film world, we care so much about Oscar contenders and serious films that B-Horror films go unnoticed. Armed with an interesting premise and a dream-like appearance, The Rizen could be one to look out for. Besides, it has to be decent: the sequel is already in post-production! The Rizen, from director Matt Mitchell and starring Laura Swift, hits VOD January 2nd, 2018.
