We all have it in our hearts that if Blumhouse’s Halloween makes a huge impression on the general public on October 19th then we could see a true uprising in other classics making their way back to the big screen. A little hope was recently sprinkled into the pot when Miramax’s CEO, Bill Block, spoke to Cinemablend.
Miramax holds the rights to the Halloween franchise, but they hold a few other notable series as well. In the conversation with Cinemablend, two of those franchises were brought up: Scream and Hellraiser. In response, Block stated,
[Halloween] was a Miramax license, and you’ll see more of these coming from the studio now… I will have some things to share with you. You mentioned something there that we’re working on – two things in there that we’re working on. This is going to be a part of the new program.
It’s been 7 years since someone slipped on the mask of Ghostface, and made Sidney’s life a living nightmare. (Not including the Scream television series, of course.) Wes Craven proudly took great care of his franchise while he was conducting, but without Craven, who will take the reins as director of the franchise? Would Kevin Williamson be willing to create another story? Would the original three (Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette) return? When asked about a possible Scream 5 while promoting Skyscraper (2018) earlier this year, Neve said that “you never know” what could happen.
As for Hellraiser, the rights have been held on by Miramax with subpar sequels still being released every few years. What would it take to get Pinhead and his cenobites back to the big screen in a glorious return to form? Can we have Clive Barker involved?
Miramax is hoping that the inevitable success of Halloween will be the answer. Jason Blum has even expressed interest in getting Scream in his repertoire. The beautiful bonding of Miramax, Blumhouse, Halloween, and those box office numbers could potentially lead to Scream finding a home with Blumhouse.
Bill Block made it clear that they were definitely working on those two titles, and when any news drop, we’ll be sure to bring it straight to you.
