Production is underway in British Columbia for the upcoming horror film, Antlers. Many are buzzing with anticipation for this film, between Guillermo del Toro’s involvement and Keri Russell’s casting. To play up the buzz, the film’s Instagram has been releasing photos for the past month captioned, “Production Diary.” The most recent post reveals what the monsters could look like, and they. are. terrifying.
Antlers takes place in a small-town in Oregon where a school teacher (Keri Russell, The Americans) and her brother, and local sheriff, (Jesse Plemons, Black Mirror) live. There, they become involved with a young students (Jeremy T. Thomas) who has a dangerous secret. A secret that may involve those terrifying red beasts from Instagram. Rounding out the cast are Graham Greene (Molly’s Game), Scott Haze (Venom), Rory Cochrane (Hostiles) and Amy Madigan (Gone Baby Gone).

The film is directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) and produced by Guillermo del Toro. This is del Toro’s first film that he has signed on to produce for Fox Searchlight, the studio that released The Shape of Water. It’s also Cooper’s first horror film, but that’s what piqued del Toro’s interest. In an interview with Collider, Cooper said, “[Guillermo] said I’ve obviously never seen you direct a horror film, but there’s a lot of horrific moments in your movies, so I’m more interested in someone who doesn’t work in that genre to step into it.”
Antlers is based on the short story, The Quiet Boy, written by Nick Antosca. Antosca and Henry Chaisson adapted to story for the screen, with revisions by Cooper. With big names involved and some horrifying teaser images, Antlers seems like it could be a great success. I would trust del Toro with most things. Keep an eye on their Instagram account for more photos — perhaps we’ll see more of the monsters.
