It’s been over a decade since the world was graced with a Thomas Harris novel. Harris’s first novel was published in 1975, and from 1981 to 2006 Harris brought us four more focusing on perhaps the greatest fictional villain ever created: Dr. Hannibal Lecter. We’re well overdue for another, but fans will only have to wait a few short months. Grand Central Publishing announced Wednesday that Harris will be debuting a new “stand-alone thriller” coming May 2019.
That’s right ladies and gentleman, this time around there will be no Dr. Lecter. While some may be disappointed that everyone’s favorite cannibal is not returning, I think it will be great to see what new plot Harris will thrill us with. The last stand-alone novel Harris published was his first novel, all the way back in 1975. Harris’ s first novel, Black Sunday, focused on a group of terrorists during the Super Bowl, and the efforts of law enforcement to stop them. Two years later, a film adaptation hit Hollywood starring Robert Shaw (Jaws) and Bruce Dern (The Burbs). With all of Harris’s novels having been adapted into film screenplays, we can hope that whatever he has scheduled for us next year is sure to get a film adaptation.
Since publishing Hannibal Rising back in 2006, Thomas Harris has remained out of the spotlight. Harris prefers his privacy but after 13 years away, fans are more than happy to have a new novel on the horizon.
