Oscar Isaac is in talks to star as Gomez Addams in the upcoming MGM reboot of The Addams Family, the Tracking Board reports. Isaac is most well-known for starring as Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is a fan-favorite for the role. A few months ago, an fan-made reboot poster portraying Isaac as Gomez made the rounds on Facebook, and now it has us wondering if MGM exec’s stumbled accross it.

The Addams Family is the spooky brainchild of cartoonist, Charles Addams. His one panel cartoons of the freaky family were originally published in The New Yorker in 1938. This led to the development of a television sitcom in the 1960’s and an animated children’s series in the 1970’s.

In 1991, a film adaptation of The Addams Family was released which starred Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams, Christina Ricci as Wednesday Addams, and Raul Julia as Gomez Addams. The film earned over $100 million at the box office and spawned a beloved sequel, Addams Family Values, which was released in 1993. Although the sequel was not nearly as financially successful as the first installment, both films have gone on to accrue a robust cult following among millennials and are considered mandatory Halloween viewing by many.

Due to Oscar Isaac’s resemblance to Raul Julia, he has long been suggested as the perfect Gomez for the upcoming re-imagining. Unfortunately for fans, the resemblance is moot as the film is intended to be animated. There were rumors of Tim Burton attached to direct a stop-motion version in 2010, but those rumors dissolved in 2013. According to IMDB, the film is still planned to be stop-motion animation, and has yet to be updated.

Pamela Pettler (Corpse Bride, Monster House) is writing the screenplay, while Conrad Vernon (Sausage Party) is set to direct. Gail Berman (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel), Alex Schwartz (Bridge to Terabithia, Journey to the Center of the Earth), and Vernon will all be producing the film.

The Addams Family film is slated to be released on October 11, 2019, and will be competing against Paramount’s upcoming, Are You Afraid of the Dark adaptation. No other cast members have been made public.
