It’s been a mostly quiet news cycle since the explosive revelation that the “dark universe” would be scrapped in favor of stand-alone, artistic takes on the Universal Monsters. We learned that horror rock star Leigh Whannell (Saw, Insidious) signed on to direct the first film in the series, The Invisible Man, and that Elizabeth Moss (Us, The One I Love) signed on in a lead role.
Yesterday, the news drought officially ended with a light drizzle of information from Deadline! Actress Storm Reid (A Wrinkle in Time, 12 Years a Slave) has signed on to play the character of Sydney. The site also revealed some information around the new character.
With her mother gone, she’s picked up the maternal slack and is very capable and mature for her age. She’s an outgoing lover of fashion who aspires to see the world, and she initially likes having Cecilia around as a role model, but grows mistrustful of her when strange things begin to happen around the house.
In addition to this casting news, Deadline also picked up an interesting tidbit of plot information!
The Leigh Whannell-directed movie follows Cecilia (Moss), who receives the news of her abusive ex-boyfriend’s suicide. She begins to re-build her life for the better, but her sense of reality is put into question when she begins to suspect her deceased lover is not actually dead.
It certainly sounds like the new incarnation of The Invisible Man could take a much darker plot turn compared to the previous versions. While the “invisible man” of old was no saint himself, turning him into an abusive ex-boyfriend could really make for a horrific, intense film.
How do you feel about the new plot revelations for The Invisible Man? Are you as relieved as I am that filmmakers abandoned the original, Avengers-style universe, and instead are allowing for individual, creative visions?
