Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood has been surprising eager film fans with one impressive casting announcement after another. Currently the cast includes all-stars Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad), Brad Pitt (Interview With The Vampire), Leonardo DiCaprio (Shutter Island), Al Pacino (The Devil’s Advocate), and cinema legend Burt Reynolds (Deliverance). And in true Tarantino fashion, even the supporting cast is stacked with impressive, talented actors. Rounding out an already impressive cast are Clifton Collins Jr. (Capote), Tim Roth (The Hateful Eight), James Remar (The Warriors), Michael Madsen (Sin City) and Emile Hirsch (Freaks) – just to name a few.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood follows, among others, a The Wrap recently learned that Once Upon A Time In Hollywood has found their Charles Manson in actor Damon Herriman. But in an interesting turn, we also learned that Herriman has just finished shooting the second season of David Fincher’s Mindhunter as none other than Charles Manson. Though it has been reported that Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is not explicitly a “Manson Movie”, several roles have already been filled for characters in Manson’s inner-circle. Included among them are Dakota Fanning (Coraline) as Squeaky Fromme, Austin Butler (Yoga Hosers) as Tex, and Burt Reynolds as ranch owner George Spahn.
Officially, “A faded TV actor and his stunt double [as they] embark on an odyssey to make a name for themselves in the film industry during the Helter Skelter reign of terror in 1969 Los Angeles”, but Tarantino has been a victim of leaked details and scripts in the past. There is a chance that his downplaying of the Manson Family’s involvement in the story is nothing more than a clever misdirection. I also find it interesting that the powers that be would choose to cast Damon Herriman to reprise a role from a different property. For now, we can only assume that Herriman’s Manson is uncanny and too good not to share. Of course, this could also be more misdirection from a creator doing everything in his power to control what information is made public about his upcoming film.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and is currently scheduled for release July 26th, 2019.
