We live in a world that is filled with lies, misrepresentation and manipulation. It’s a scary place to live right now, so many of us have found solace in the familiar. We have been re-watching the same old shows (The Office for me… Dawson’s Creek for my wife), talking to the same people and trusting only those that are closest to us. With his latest film, What Keeps You Alive, writer/director Colin Minihan (Grave Encounters) takes that sense of security and tosses it directly into the shredder.
On their first wedding anniversary, Jules (Brittany Allen) and Jackie (Hannah Emily Anderson) head into the woods for a nice secluded vacation. What starts off as a lovely way to celebrate their love quickly turns into a fight to survive as Jackie reveals a psychopathic side to her that she has kept hidden from her wife. Allen and Anderson also starred in last year’s Jigsaw, and Allen also starred in Minihan’s zombie film It Stains the Sand Red back in 2016. Martha MacIsaac (Superbad) also star in this film, which has been described Brian Tallerico from rogerebert.com as the “kind of thing you’re likely to catch late at night on Shudder and wonder why more people didn’t tell you about it before.”
After premiering at this year’s SXSW, What Keeps You Alive will open in major U.S. markets and on VOD August 24th. If you decide to watch it with someone you trust or a significant other, just make sure to keep one eye on them the whole time. You never know what lies inside someone’s mind.
