As the recently announced sequel to David Gordon Green’s 2018 Halloween begins pre-production, juicy tidbits of news continue to feed us hungry fans.

We already know Gordon Green and Danny McBride returned to write both Halloween Kills (2020) and Halloween Ends (2021). Jamie Lee Curtis, Andi Matichak, and Judy Greer are reprising their roles as the Strode family. Actor and OG Michael Myers Nick Castle revealed via his twitter account that he will be returning in some capacity in the sequels, in addition to full-time 2018 Michael, James Jude Courtney (who, I must add, absolutely nailed the role). While we know nearly all of the cast and crew of last year’s Halloween will be returning for Halloween Kills, will we see the return of any familiar faces in the Halloween franchise as a whole? Turns out, we just might.

In an interesting exchange from two reporters very much “in the know”, Collider‘s Jeff Sneider and Variety‘s Justin Kroll revealed via the former’s podcast The Sneider Cut that Tommy Doyle will be re-entering the Halloween universe! For those who don’t remember, little Tommy is the young boy Laurie Strode is babysitting in John Carpenter’s 1979 Halloween. More obscurely, the character came back in 1995’s Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, portrayed by now Hollywood A-lister Paul Rudd. This is where the news gets interesting.

Apparently, the filmmakers have actually approached Paul Rudd to reprise the role of Tommy. Considering Gordon Green and McBride’s decision to ignore every sequel in the Halloween universe, this is an interesting development to say the least. Why cast the same actor for the same role in a movie that completely ignores said original role? Unfortunately, this was not meant to be, as the reporters went on to say that Rudd declined the role due to scheduling conflicts caused by his role in the upcoming Ghostbusters sequel/reboot. It was later implied in the podcast that the role of Tommy had been given to someone else, though no other details were added.

Just how big of a role will Tommy Doyle play in the new films? Will even more characters from the franchise lore return to Haddonfield next October? Stay tuned here at Nightmare on Film Street for all the news about to come!
