We’ve got bad news, Archie fans. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Riverdale won’t crossover in the foreseeable future. This news comes to us via Deadline. To get this scoop, Deadline sat down with Sabrina comic writer and Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. In the interview, Aguirre-Sacasa was clear that, though there are similar minds behind the shows, Sabrina had to be on her own for a while. He cites the creative process as the reason behind this. According to Aguirre-Sacasa:
I think right now we’re just making sure that the shows have their own identities and own set of rules.
We know that this news might be disappointing to some of you. However, there might still be reason to hope. Aguirre-Sacasa doesn’t completely rule out a crossover in the future. The language of his quote seems to hint that this is a temporary measure. There may be some flexibility on this thinking once Sabrina finds its rhythm as a show. After all, shared-universe entertainment has never been more popular. It’s unlikely that the owners of the two popular properties have ruled out a crossover altogether. It just might have to wait until the shows are a bit more established.
Aguirre-Sacasa also spoke to Deadline about another Riverdale spinoff on its way. Though he doesn’t go into specifics, Aguirre-Sacasa says that the spinoff will be very different from the current Archie line-up. Since both Riverdale and Sabrina are dark shows, could this mean the next show will take a lighter tone? It’s definitely possible. To be fair though, Riverdale has done a great job in bringing combining the troubles of growing up with serious, adult darkness. Sabrina is sure to follow suit, so the producers might not want to stray too far. Whatever the show ends up being, we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
