Thought the Saw franchise was getting stale? Nope, it’s just getting started. Chris Rock’s reboot/sequel(?) to the twist-filled horror franchise has added a big name to its cast: Nick Fury himself, Samuel L. Jackson!

This news, confirmed by Bloody Disgusting, is in addition to the cast we already knew: Max Minghella, Marisol Nichols, and Chris Rock are all confirmed as cast members.

The film was first announced last year, and Rock himself penned the story for the upcoming film. Darren Lynn Bousman, who directed the second, third, and fourth Saw films, will be back in the director’s seat for the reboot. Mark Burg and Oren Kouls, who have been involved with the franchise for years, are onboard as producers. The chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, Joe Drake, gave this statement to Variety: “We think Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock along with Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols make this film completely special in the Saw canon and we can’t wait to unleash this unexpected and sinister new story on fans of this franchise. This is next level of Saw on full tilt.”

We know that Rock will play a police detective investigating a series of murders, and Jackson will portray his father. Minghella (The Handmaid’s Tale) will play Rock’s partner on the case, and Nichols (Riverdale) will play a police captain.

One cast member we have not heard mention of so far is Tobin Bell, who has played Jigsaw in every Saw film to date. If this is a true reboot, it seems unlikely that Bell will play the villain once again. It would be nice to see him with some other role in the film, however.

Rock is extremely talented, and hopefully his love for the Saw franchise can keep this one fresh and not just a vanity project. It is scheduled to release in October of 2020.
