The adaptation for The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson, has been in the works for some time now. On Monday, at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, Hulu’s Senior Vice President Craig Erwich officially announced that the series is being developed by Hulu. Also, Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are signed on to produce the series.
The Devil in the White City, released in 2003, is a historical non-fiction book telling the story of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, through the eyes of architect Daniel Burnham. Intertwined throughout is the story of H.H. Holmes, who has been said to be America’s first serial killer – confessing up to 27 murders (but the realy number could be as high as 200). He killed his victims in the World’s Fair Hotel or the “Murder Castle” during the same time as the fair.
DiCaprio initially acquired the rights from Tom Cruise for the book almost ten years ago with plans to adapt it into a film where he himself would star as the serial killer, H.H. Holmes with Martin Scorsese directing. This is not the first project they have worked on together. They have also done the Oscar nominated The Wolf of Wall Street (2015), Shutter Island (2010) and The Departed (2006). They also have two other projects in the works, Roosevelt and Killers of the Flower Moon.
The Devil in the White City will also be produced by Stacey Sher, Rick Yorn, Emma Koskoff, Jennifer Davisson and Paramount Television. Billy Ray (Overlord, The Hunger Games) is penning the script.
