AMC’s streaming service Shudder offers an incredible selection of horror films and TV shows both new and old. They’ve also become a provider of their own original content that has been well-received by horror fans. In the last few months alone, Shudder has brought Joe Bob Briggs back into our homes, produced the new documentary Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror (2019), not to mention the upcoming Creepshow series.
To add to that collection of impressive original content, Shudder has announced that they are producing a “high-end” documentary series that explores the strange happenings that have occurred on certain movie sets, leading them to be regarded as being haunted. The brand new series, titled Cursed Films, will examine the events that took place on these “haunted” productions through “interviews with experts, witnesses and the cast, directors and producers who lived through the real-life events.” This includes occurrences that have resulted in tragedy or unexplainable paranormal-like moments as have been recorded on the sets of The Exorcist (1973), Poltergeist (1982), The Omen (1976), and several others.
Beyond its fascinating content, Cursed Films shows promise with Jay Cheel (Beauty Day, How to Build a Time Machine) as its writer, director, and editor. The series will be executive produced by Andrew Nicholas McCann Smith and Laura Perlmutter of First Love Films (The Dark), as well as Jay Cheel and Brian Robertson (Diamond Tongues).
In the press release for the new series, Jay Cheel said, “As a documentary filmmaker and lifelong horror fan, this project has offered an amazing opportunity to indulge my own curiosities surrounding these ‘cursed’ film productions. In turn, Cursed Films offers Shudder’s audience a unique perspective on the making of these classic movies while attempting to uncover why we’re so captivated by the catastrophes and coincidences connected to them.”
Cursed Films will be released later this year on Shudder. If you’re already familiar with a few of these cursed and haunted movie sets, let us know your favourite stories on Twitter, in the official NOFS Subreddit, and on Facebook in the Horror Movie Fiend Club!
