Yes, New York Comic Con is still sometimes about comic books. The second biggest convention of its kind in North America wrapped up on Sunday, but not before breaking some news that traversed the worlds of comic books and horror movies. Among the announcements, it was revealed that Jen and Sylvia Soska will be penning an upcoming Marvel Comic, but not about Ghost Rider, Blade, or any of the other horror tinged characters. Nope, the Twisted Twins are entering the spy game with Black Widow.
The red-haired Russian assassin turned Avenger will begin new solo adventures in 2019 as told by the Soska Sisters. This according to Marvel themselves (via The Hollywood Reporter), as it was one of the announcements at their “Women of Marvel” panel at NYCC Sunday. It was also announced that artist Flaviano Armentaro, whose credits include I Am Groot and America, will be drawing what the Soskas write on the new Black Widow.
It’s been a tough couple of years for the comic book Widow, who most people might know best from her role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe portrayed by Scarlett Johansson. Black Widow was actually killed in the 2017 crossover Secret Empire, the same series that revealed that Captain America was a secret HYDRA agent. Naturally, she has since been resurrected, and the new Soska Sisters helmed book will be her first solo comic book since 2017.
As for the Twisted Twins, they’re quite experienced in writing comic books if you didn’t know. They co-wrote a graphic novel called Kill-Crazy Nymphos Attackwith Deadpool writer Daniel Way, which they independently published thanks to crowd-funding efforts in 2015. They’ve also previously written for Marvel with the 2015 miniseries Secret Wars Journal.
Of course, in the midst of all their comic book writing, the Soskas also have to find time to work on their next film, the remake of the David Cronenberg classic, Rabid. The new Black Widow comic will appear on comic book store shelves sometime in January. Excted? Let us know on Twitter, Reddit, and in the Horror Movie Fiend Club on Facebook.
