Starcourt Mall Has It All!
Netflix just dropped an ingenious teaser trailer for the upcoming third season of Stranger Things. Disguised as a promo video for the new Starcourt shopping mall, the teaser above welcomes you back to Hawkins, Indiana and possibly hints at the release date for the new season. In the trailer you’ll see big hair dos, pastel colored pants, and a state-of-the-art food court! But more importantly, right at the end, you’ll see the words: Coming Next Summer!
I don’t think it’s a stretch to assume that we’ll be seeing the gang return this time next year.
Strangers Things Season 3 began filming April 23 and is expected to be a shorter, 8 episode season. Cary Elwes, known for his lead roles in The Princess Bride (1987) and Saw (2004) will be joining the cast as Mayor Kline. Netflix has described the mayor as “Handsome, slick and sleazy. More concerned with his own image than with the people of the small town he governs.” Is it possible that he has connections with Hawkins Lab? As well, Jake Busey (Starship Troopers, The Frighteners), has been cast as Bruce, a journalist with “Questionable morals and a sick sense of humor.” It might be safe to assume this journalist wants to make big money by publishing stories about The Upside Down. This could mean bad news for the town of Hawkins and Will in particular.
At present, we know Season 3 will pick things up a year after the events of Season 2. This places Season 3’s story in the summer of 1985. Of course, die-hard 80’s fans will know that this is the same summer that Back to the Future was released. Speculation is that the iconic time-travel film would serve as a huge cultural reference point for Season 3. Ghostbusters similarly served a big reference point for Season 2.
