SUSPIRIA Remake Isn’t A Remake, Says Director Luca Guadagnino

The Suspiria remake is something that not everyone is sure about, but director Luca Guadagnino and actress Tilda Swinton want people to know that it’s not a remake… at least in their eyes.

Guadagnino recently spoke with Criterion, saying:

I have three months until I finish it. It’s a very special film, and I’m proud of it. I wonder all the time how people will react to it, being that it is based on a masterpiece. But I can say that my Suspiria is a very personal film; it’s like oxygen to me. When I saw the original movie thirty-two years ago, the emotion I felt was so strong, so mind-blowing, and so important to my upbringing. I wanted to investigate the experience I had watching that film.

Tilda Swinton, who will star in the upcoming movie, spoke with Allocine, a French cinema company, and had this to say:

It’s another version, not a remake. It is important to say that because we are ardent admirers of the film of Dario Argento , and it is impossible to remake this film. But if I accepted, it’s because it will be a completely different movie! It’s inspired by the same story, but it goes in different directions, it explores other reasons. It’s semantics, of course, but I think people really have to understand that this is not a remake, because the word “remake” gives the impression that we want to erase the original, and [that is] the opposite of what we are trying to do.

Although some people are still skeptical, the cast looks promising. With Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) and Chloe Grace Moretz (Carrie) starring alongside Tilda Swinton, it seems that the remake just might have a chance. On top of that, actress Jessica Harper from the original film will also have a cameo.

Dario Argento’s Suspiria is a cult classic and it will be very hard to convince die-hard fans of the original that this will live up to the Suspiria name. Guadagnino has a very daunting task ahead of him, but there have been some very successful horror remakes. We will just have to wait and see.

Suspiria will be released sometime in 2018.
