The first trailer for indie thriller Sweet Virginia just dropped, and it’s brimming with quiet suspense, dark motels, and threatening violence. The film, from director Jamie M. Dagg, premiered at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival to promising buzz.

Sweet Virginia stars Jon Bernthal as Sam, a former rodeo star and current owner of a motel in small town Alaska. The town in question has recently seen a spate of violent, unexplained crimes. When a drifter named Elwood (Christopher Abbott)  shows up at the motel, Sam befriends the mysterious young man. But their bond proves more dangerous than Sam bargained for.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In the wake of a triple murder that leaves the residents of a remote Alaskan outpost on edge, tightly wound drifter Elwood (Christopher Abbott) checks into a motel run by Sam (Jon Bernthal), a former rodeo champion whose imposing physical presence conceals a troubled soul. Bound together by their outsider status, the two men strike up an uneasy friendship — a dangerous association that will set off a new wave of violence and unleash Sam’s darkest demons. Driven by tour de force performances from Christopher Abbott and Jon Bernthal, this precision crafted thriller pulses with an air of quivering dread.

The trailer promises a gritty small town atmosphere, violent criminal intrigue, looming suspense, and strong performances from Abbott and Bernthal. The cold, rural setting evokes the work of the Coen Brothers, and the film has already been compared to their early films.

Sweet Virginia also stars Imogen Poots, Rosemarie DeWitt, Odessa Young, Jared Abrahamson, Joseph Lyle Taylor, Darcy Laurie, and Scott A. McGillivray. It will be released by IFC to select theaters and V.O.D. on November 17, 2017.
