Why should Marvel and DC Comics get to have all the fun? Just before the wide release this Friday, Sony Pictures dropped the final trailer for the superhero-horror Brightburn! The “superhorror” film (I don’t know if that’s been used yet, but I’m claiming it) is produced by James Gunn, director and/or writer of such horror films as Slither, The BELKO Experiment, and the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead.
Brightburn aims to show basically what would happen if all those fears about Superman using his powers for evil instead of good came true. Count me in! Check out the final trailer and plot synopsis below!
The plot synopsis from the film’s official site:
What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? With Brightburn, the visionary filmmaker behind Guardians of the Galaxy and Slither presents a startling, subversive take on a radical new genre: superhero horror.
Brightburn marks the wide-release debut for director David Yarovesky, with his first feature film The Hive receiving a limited release in 2015. Brightburn stars Elizabeth Banks (Slither, The Hunger Games), Jackson A. Dunn (Avengers: Endgame, Shameless), Jennifer Holland (American Horror Story, Sun Records), David Denman (The Gift, Parenthood), and Matt Jones (Breaking Bad, Mom). The film was written by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn. In addition to James Gunn, Kenneth Huang also shares a producer credit.
From this last look, it appears the filmmakers behind Brightburn really strive to include some heavy horror elements! Will the fans of everything superhero cross over to our wicked world of wretchedness and see this in theatres? Will there be enough horror elements to appease those looking for a scary fix to kick off summer 2019? We’ll find out soon!
Brightburn will be in a theatre near you Friday, May 24th.
