There have been quite a few Purge jokes circulating the internet this past year. The spread of misinformation and distrust in the American government has many people joking that we need a real-life purge to hit the restart button. To, Make America Great Again, you might say. The producers of this summer’s The First Purge are playing on that political motif with their first poster and teaser trailer. In it, they show us a snippet of the propaganda machine the First Founding Fathers employed to recruit citizens to the cause.
The film was originally titled The Purge: The Island due to its focus on the first ever purge night held on Staten Island. Blumhouse, who is producing the film, has since changed the title and brought a big-picture focus to the events leading up to the first Purge night. Here’s the official synopsis for the film:
Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s twelve hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: ‘The First Purge’. To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.
The Purge series has always been open about it’s political message. From the class warfare shown in the first two films (The New Founding Fathers of America instituted the Purge to kill poor people), to the Neo-Nazi support of the NFFA in Election Year, the series has always worn its opinions on its sleeves. Some have called this new teaser and poster a little “too on the nose”, but it isn’t. It’s unsettling because it’s so familiar. We recognize those sentiments because they are force fed to us during our 24/7 news cycle. We will never revert to a 12 hour Murder-A-Thon, but the underlying rhetoric is already there, boiling underneath the surface of Americans everywhere.
No matter what your politics are, The First Purge is going to be a kick-ass edition to an already entertaining and uber-successful series of horror films.
