Here come the Men in Black! That Will Smith theme is a classic by any measure if you were of a certain age when the original Men in Black was released in 1997, and it will likely be on your mind the rest of the day. Can the new Men in Black International hope to meet, or exceed, the expectations of the original? It’s an interesting question, but at the very least it looks like the new MiB won’t be short on action.
Below is the first official photo from Men in Black International, the fourth movie in the series, and the first to feature Thor: Ragnarok co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson as Agents H and M who operate out of the London office of the Men in Black. Not much is known about the new Men in Black other than who’s starring it. Along with Hemsworth and Thompson, the cast includes Rafe Spall, and Kumail Nanjiani, along with Liam Neeson and Rebecca Ferguson in mysterious roles. Emma Thompson will also appear as O, the only the character that looks to be carried over from the previous Men in Black films. In Men in Black 3, O succeed Z (played by Rip Torn) as the head of the New York office of the MiB.
Based on the independent comic book created by Lowell Cunningham, the Men in Black movies follow an extra-governmental police force that patrols, protects, and investigates alien activity on planet Earth. Barry Sonnenfeld directed the first three films, which were released in 1997, 2002, and 2012 respectively, grossing a combined $1.65 billion at the worldwide box office. The series to this point has starred Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, and people in the know are playing coy as to whether or not they make an appearance in Men in Black International.
Men in Black International is being directed F. Gary Gray (Fate of the Furious) from a script by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway (Transformers: The Last Knight). It’s due to open in theatres everywhere on June 14, 2019.
