Well, we did it guys! We survived another August 29th without suffering the wrath of Judgement Day. As a reward for our survival, James Cameron (Aliens, 1986) and Director Tim Miller (Deadpool, 2016) have rewarded humanity for our continuing existence.

A few months back, the teaser trailer for Terminator: Dark Fate received mostly lukewarm opinions. Sure, everyone was excited to see Linda Hamilton (the franchise should’ve never moved away from her) back as Sarah Connor. But sadly, everything else featured in that trailer seemed like a rehash of other Terminator films.

So, what makes the trailer released just after midnight different? The new trailer (featured below) still plays on our nostalgia for the once-mighty franchise. Here, we get a snippet of the late Brad Fiedel’s iconic Terminator theme. Also back is the iconic imagery of the post-apocalyptic machine-dominated world and, of course, we get a more fleshed out idea of what Arnold Schwarzenegger’s role might be in this film.

Yes, all of these things are still playing on our nostalgia for the iconic franchise, but the second trailer feels fresher than the previous teaser. We also get glimpses of what looks to be an incredible set-piece between dueling planes, and the fights teased here between new series star Mackenzie Davis (Blade Runner 2049,  2017) and evil Terminator Gabriel Luna (True Detective Season 2, 2015) look like the next level battles we would expect to see from two killing machines.

Terminator has had a rough road since the highs on T2: Judgement Day back in 1991, and the trailer wants you to remember that James Cameron has nothing to do with those inferior sequels. While he is back (in a producer role) for this “true” Terminator 3, this is still Tim Miller’s show. Thankfully, Miller has history of meeting unprecedented fan demand. He took Deadpool, a once thought unfilmable concept, and turned into a billion-dollar franchise.

I went from kinda blah on Terminator: Dark Fate, to being completely onboard with what Cameron and Miller have teased for the franchise. If the film can nail all the high marks in the trailer, and successfully build on what fans love and expect from a Terminator film, Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger could have a come back hit on their hands.

“There’s no fate but what we make for ourselves.” Terminator: Dark Fate staring Linda Hamilton, Mackenzie Davis, Gabriel Luna, Natalia Reyes, Edward Furlong, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, hits theaters on November 1st, 2019.
