In the “Kick Ass Women of AMC” panel on Wednesday, new The Walking Dead showrunner Angela Kang revealed that Season 9 will be jumping ahead a few years.
We’re playing with time in the season, so we get to jump forward in the story.
This should not come as much of a shock for those who have kept up with the comics. The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman jumped ahead a few years after the battle with Negan in All Out War.
And with the news of the departure of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) sometime during The Walking Dead Season 9 it makes sense. Really, how do you announce a departure without assuming “killed off”!? This could be the way to do it. There have been subtle (and not so subtle) hints throughout Season 8 now seem, in hindsight, obvious. This is where it’s been headed all along. Old Man Rick anyone? The last season was filled with “flash-forward” sequences that originally seemed like dreams.
Kang has been with the series since the very first season. Originally as a writer/producer Angela is no stranger to the inner workings of these actors and characters. She also stated that the upcoming season will have a very fresh look and feel, saying “We come in on some pretty fun stuff. I’m really focusing a lot on the core character relationships in the show that have kind of been long-lasting, as well as all of our wonderful series regulars.”. Which is reassuring as the show’s popularity has been slowly declining from its huge debut on AMC back in 2010.
Crafting a hit TV show is slightly different from a comic book, but The Walking Dead has done an amazing job of staying true to the source material. All while still giving long-time fans as well as new ones surprises along the way. In the issues the television series will presumably pull from for Season 9, two years have passed since Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) was imprisoned.
The Walking Dead Season 9 will air this fall. Still a fan of the show? Or, like a Walker, do you think the show has shambled on well past its prime? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, on Twitter and on the Horror Fiends of Nightmare on Film Street Facebook group!
