Listen up werewolves and hell hounds! Issa López, Director of the powerful Tigers Are Not Afraid, has officially signed on to direct a film produced by the ultimate monster aficionado Guillermo del Toro. But wait, there’s more! Not only is the world’s next dream team currently forming as these very words are being written but the movie is reportedly a werewolf-western.

Lopez mentioned to Entertainment Weekly that she was “super excited,” noting that “there’s not really that many brilliant, brilliant werewolf movies”. So she’s setting out to change that with a killer script she wrote herself. And with del Toro in her corner she might actually manage to pull off the next great werewolf flick. The two together are hoping to revisit the genre and revitalize it by “revisiting the essence of what it is, which is trying to contain the beast in you. It’s as simple as that, and I think that’s perfectly relatable with humankind, and particularly the moment that we’re living in”. And no one seems to do that better than del Toro.

Unfortunately for us there isn’t much else to report about the project, including actors, plot, and release dates, but all goo things coem to those who wait. For those interested Issa López previous work, check out her film Tigers Are Not Afraid, a dark fairytale that’s been cruising through festivals since 2017. Both del Toro and Stephen King recommend it, so I think it’s safe to say you’ll like it. Our very own Chris Aitkens called the film “a tale of childhood innocence being destroyed by adult cruelty [that] still has elements of wonder and magic, manifested in Estrella’s visions“.
