Toronto After Dark Film Festival Award Winners Announced

Wrapping up it’s 12th annual film festival, Toronto After Dark have announced this year’s winners. Unlike most festivals, the jury for Toronto After Dark is the audience. Voting on categories from Best Film to Best Kill, the awards reflect exactly how fans react to the films presented. Not to say that most awards are presented by stodgy panels commenting more on the “state of film” than the thrill of exciting flicks, but who better to tell you what movie is worth than the viewing public? And for that reason, you might find some surprising exclusions on the lists. We were shocked to see such a low turnout for My Friend Dahmer and Lowlife but at the same time, impressed with the strength of films like The Endless.

From Toronto After Dark:

Trench 11, the gritty World War One set horror thriller directed by Leo Scherman took Top Prize, the Audience Choice Award for Best Feature Film Gold plus three other Specialty Awards including Best Horror and Scariest Film. Best Feature Film Silver went to Mayhem, Joe Lynch’s virus outbreak horror comedy which also took home three additional awards including Best Hero for Steven Yeun’s (The Walking Dead) lead character. The Endless , the latest sci-fi mystery from Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead captured Best Feature Film Bronze as well as six additional category awards including Best Director, Screenplay and Most Original Film.

Additional Major Winners in the Specialty Categories included Victor Crowley which won four awards including Best Kill, The Villianess which won three awards including Best Action, Tragedy Girls which won three awards including Best Comedy and Beyond Skyline which won two awards including Best Sci-Fi.
